Namrung Gorkha Flood Response

Standing Together in Times of Crisis

On 6 September 2026, the community of Namrung in Tsum-Nubri Rural Municipality–4, Gorkha, was struck by a sudden and destructive debris-laden flood in the Therang Khola. The disaster caused extensive damage to homes, bridges, hydropower infrastructure, trails and other essential facilities.

Thankfully, no human casualties were reported. However, the impact on families and the wider community has been significant.

Four Families Lost Their Homes

Four local houses were swept away by the flood, affecting four families. In addition to losing their homes and belongings, affected families have faced disruptions to essential services and daily life.

Two bridges were also destroyed, including a bridge connecting Namrung with nearby areas and another crossing affected by the rising Budhi Gandaki River. Flooding and landslides further damaged sections of trails and local infrastructure, making movement between settlements difficult.

Electricity and Essential Services Disrupted

The flood severely damaged two micro-hydropower projects. One of them was a newly completed 100-kW project, estimated to have cost approximately Rs. 70 million, which was undergoing trial generation when it was severely damaged.

The loss of electricity has affected everyday life in Namrung, including lighting, communication, phone charging and other essential services relied upon by local residents.

Impact on the Manaslu Trekking Route

The disaster also disrupted the Manaslu trekking route, affecting both local movement and tourism in the region. Following the damage, the District Administration Office, Gorkha, temporarily advised trekkers to avoid the Manaslu and Larke Pass routes.

Local residents and authorities have since worked together to establish temporary crossings and alternative routes, allowing movement to resume along parts of the trekking trail. Nevertheless, permanent reconstruction of bridges, trails and other infrastructure remains essential.

Immediate Relief Reaches Affected Families

Following the disaster, relief materials were transported to Namrung by helicopter and distributed to affected families. The assistance included:

• Food packages for daily needs
• Cooking utensils
• Water filters
• Clothing and shoes
• Blankets, mattresses and sleeping bags
• Tents and tarpaulins
• Zinc roofing sheets and nails
• Solar panels

For families who had just experienced the loss of their homes and possessions, receiving these essential supplies brought immediate relief and comfort. More importantly, the support reminded them that they were not alone. Their smiles and gratitude after receiving the relief materials reflected the importance of standing beside communities when they need support most.

A Community Moving Forward

The immediate emergency response has helped address some of the most urgent needs. However, the road to recovery is ongoing.

The community continues to need support for the reconstruction of homes, bridges, hydropower infrastructure, trails and other essential facilities. Restoring reliable access and electricity will be particularly important for families, local businesses, tourism, education, communication and everyday life.
