From Sirdibas to serving his community as an acupuncturist.

Krishna Gurung was born in 2001 in Sirdibas, Chumnubri Rural Municipality–3, in the remote northern part of Gorkha. The eldest of three children, he grew up in a poor family whose parents worked as daily-wage labourers.
When Krishna was young, his mother died from pneumonia after the family could not afford the treatment she needed in Pokhara. After her death, his father struggled with grief and began drinking heavily while continuing to work to support the family. As Krishna remembers, “Life was not easy for us.”
His two younger sisters were eventually taken in by other families, while Krishna stayed with his father and continued his education. After completing Grade 10, he began working as a labourer because his family could not afford further schooling. Then Krishna lost his father unexpectedly. Once again, his community came forward, helping with the funeral expenses and supporting him through one of the hardest moments of his life.
A community member introduced Krishna to the Kyimolung scholarship programme. In 2022 he was selected for a fully funded healthcare scholarship supported by HERO, USA, through the Kyimolung Foundation.
Coming from a government-school background, studying a professional healthcare course in English was a challenge. Through determination and hard work, Krishna completed the three-year course at the Rural Health Education and Service Center.
Krishna chose acupuncture because he had seen many elderly people, farmers and labourers in his community living with chronic back, knee, shoulder and other musculoskeletal pain after years of demanding physical work.
“I have seen many people in my community suffering from chronic back, knee, and shoulder pain with my own eyes.”
Having finished his final-year examinations, Krishna is preparing for his professional licensing examination. His goal is to return to northern Gorkha and serve the people who supported him throughout his life.
The foundation hopes to strengthen healthcare in Phillim and the surrounding area through a community healthcare centre offering acupuncture, dental care, Sowa Rigpa, emergency care and other community-based health services. Krishna received help when his family needed it most. Now he is preparing to return home and help others.
